  • advisory

The concept of advisory at HVA was originally inspired by Ted Sizer’s Coalition of Essential Schools. At the core of our student life are close relationships between students and caring adults. Starting in fifth grade, our advisory program provides an emotionally safe environment and social support system for students, as well as a sense of belonging and a forum for conflict resolution and character development. Advisory ensures that each student has consistent contact with one adult, the advisor, throughout the academic year. The advisor keeps parents informed and involved with each student’s progress, answers questions, and offers support. At the high school level, advisors meet with small groups for academic goal setting, community building activities, and discussion.
